It is a graphical representation using defined symbols and charts to explain the flow of data through a system or process. System analysts, database administrators, and designers often use the visual tool to describe the flow of information in a system visually and how that information is processed. The diagram comprises different components such as data sources, stores, destinations, flows, and processes. It is generally used to identify potential areas of improvement and present the system’s operation and data structure to the stakeholders.
